As you may already know from a previous post, the butcher shop Papa Smurf owns, recently got a make-over in the pavement department. And what a stir it created that week. After dodging potholes, dealing with limited parking due to folks who don’t know how to park, and just generally wanting the place to look more professional, the crew was finally lined up to come and spiffy up the drive.
Little did any of us realize that it would not only cause the customers to enjoy the smooth ride, but that our inner child would once again come alive and on the busiest day of the week! Thursdays are the days the guys slaughter the animals and there is little time for “horsing around”. Mom always brings breakfast for the entire crew because Papa Smurf feels it is important for them to take a tiny break and it’s a nice breather from the hurried pace you’ll find out in the “kill floor”. Now that Jamie has the privilege of delivering the bison on a Thursday, we also get to play a part in Thursday’s…I go along on the days it suits me and I think it’s a grand excuse to see my family if only for a little. So on this particular day we were thrilled that we got to be included in the festivities. The pavement was still a tad “wet” so it was empty…that was except for…
THE WAGON!!!
My older brother, Mike, had gotten the idea that morning to break in the driveway in true, well, Mikey style. He videotaped himself on the first ride over the smooth blacktop and what a hoot to watch! So at lunchtime we all agreed that it was an image that needed recreated. We had no idea that paving the driveway could be so therapeutic for soul, but therapeutic it was. We all enjoyed a day of laughter, family and a sense of childhood again. Just about everyone, even Mom, had their turn on the wagon.
I left that day feeling like the little girl inside didn’t completely grow up with me…there’s still a part of her that craves a little wagon ride down a freshly paved drive. So come along with me as I share the memory and thrill of “The Ride”!
I was also able to capture a few pictures of Jason’s girls who usually come over to see us on Thursdays. Sure makes the visit all the more sweeter when some tiny people are waiting to see you!
